What is Gōjū-ryū Karate?

Gōjū-ryū Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that originated in Okinawa, combining hard (Go) and soft (Ju) techniques. It emphasises a balance between powerful, linear strikes and circular, flowing movements, making it an effective and adaptable fighting system.
Key Characteristics of Gōjū-ryū Karate
-
Hard and Soft Techniques – Uses strong, forceful strikes (punches, kicks, blocks) alongside fluid, redirectional movements (joint locks, parries, breathing techniques).
-
Close-Range Combat – Focuses on in-fighting, using efficient hand techniques, low kicks, and grappling.
-
Breathing & Conditioning – Includes special breathing exercises like Sanchin Kata, which develop core strength, endurance, and focus.
-
Kata-Based Training – Traditional forms (kata) teach fundamental techniques, strategy, and self-defence principles.
-
Self-Defence Oriented – Emphasises practical applications for real-world self-defence, including strikes, blocks, throws, and locks.
History of Gōjū-ryū
Gōjū-ryū was founded by Chojun Miyagi in the early 20th century. It evolved from Naha-Te, a style of Okinawan martial arts influenced by Chinese White Crane Kung Fu. Miyagi formalised the system, blending Chinese and Okinawan techniques into a structured, disciplined practice. Today Gōjū-ryū Karate is under the care of Morio Higaonna who trained under An’ichi Miyagi, a top student of Chojun Miyagi.
